Services

ARHA has diligently served Alexandria’s low and moderate income families since 1939.  Its primary mission is to provide decent and safe accommodations at affordable rents.  In furthering its mission, ARHA promotes personal and economic self – sufficiency for program participants through the implementation of social service programs that enhance family’s quality of life. ARHA operates four primary social service centers: Ruby J. Tucker; Montgomery Street Family Resource, the Ladrey Senior Program and the Charles Houston Senior Center.

Ruby Tucker Family Center

The Ruby Tucker Center is named after former ARHA Board of Commissioner and community activist Ruby J. Tucker who dedicated her life to serving the less fortunate in Alexandria. Open in May 2009 and located at 322 Tancil Court, in the heart of Alexandria at the Section 8 Moderate Rehabilitation Development, the center currently operates many program initiatives. The RTFC seeks to honor Ms. Tucker’s legacy by providing a wide array of services for kindergarten through adult residents.

Family Resource Center

The Family Resources Learning Center formerly located at 910 Montgomery Street, primarily serves families of the James Bland, Samuel Madden and Andrew Adkins Public Developments at his temporary location at the Charles Houston Center and the Alexandria Residents Association (ARA) at 1003 Montgomery Street.  The center works in partnership with the Alexandria City Public School (ACPS) System. The center serves parents and children (K-8) providing homework assistance, and tutoring in the areas of reading and math support on site. The center specializes in promoting environmental education and awareness.  It also utilizes a lending library where parents and children can take books home to enhance learning and parenting.

Charles Houston Senior Center

The Charles Houston Senior Center is operated in conjunction with a grant from the City of Alexandria's Office of Aging & Adult Services.  Operated daily by ARHA staff in the Charles Houston Recreation Center, it works with senior residents of the east side of Alexandria, including the Ladrey High-Rise and Annie B. Rose House communities.  Breakfast and lunch is served daily and programs include activities such as exercise, arts and crafts, consumer and wellness education programs and weekly excursions with transportation provided by the Office of Aging and Adult Services Special Transportation Unit.

Ladrey Senior Program

The Ladrey Senior Program is operated within the 90 unit Ladrey Senior High-Rise Building located at 300 Wythe Street.  Services provided to the elderly include health care, Medicaid/Medicare counseling, referrals, and social activities throughout the week.

In addition to the specific activities operated at the Center below is a list of other activities ARHA sponsors and undertake throughout the year= some in partnership with other city and community organizations.
