ALX Breathes—a free program for residents with asthma and COPD—is now live and taking participants! This is the program that many of you helped shape with our working session before a meeting a few months ago. Please share this information widely in the community.

Here’s an overview:

• Most asthma and COPD emergency department visits are preventable. Our home environments can really impact our breathing, especially conditions like mold, pests, rodents, and significant clutter that many low-income residents experience.
• The Alexandria Health Department has a new, FREE program for residents—ALX Breathes—that supports individuals with asthma or COPD to address the home issues that may be triggering attacks.
• The program includes several home visits to identify potential issues, and provides free green cleaning supplies, education, resource referrals, and tailored goal setting.
• Signing up is really simple and takes just a few minutes.

  • Individuals must live in the city of Alexandria, make less than 80% of the area median income, and be diagnosed with asthma or COPD by a health care provider.
  • Right now the program is just in English, but we hope to eventually expand to Spanish and Amharic.
