The Charles Houston Senior Center
About Us
The Charles Houston Senior Center (CHSC) is a partnership with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA), funded by the City of Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services. Our mission is to empower older adults to live healthy, active, and independent lives by providing nutritious meals, meaningful social connections, and access to programs that support overall well-being. Through our congregate meal program, seniors enjoy balanced meals in a warm and welcoming environment that encourages fellowship, reduces social isolation, and strengthens community. The CHSC is a place where friendships are built, lives are enriched, and every participant is valued.
In addition to daily congregate meals, the CHSC offers a variety of programs and services designed to promote wellness, independence, and aging in place with dignity. Participants have opportunities to engage in health and wellness activities, fitness classes, educational workshops, technology training, creative arts, recreational programming, and resource navigation. Through partnerships with local organizations, we also connect older adults with benefits counseling, health screenings, caregiver resources, transportation assistance, and other supportive services that help them remain safe and independent in their homes.
Located in the heart of Alexandria's historic Parker-Gray District, the CHSC, affectionately known as The Krunch Bunch, has been operating for over 50 years. For generations, the Parker-Gray neighborhood has been a cornerstone of African American history and culture in Alexandria, built on the values of family, faith, education, and neighborly support. We are honored to carry that legacy forward by providing a vibrant senior program that creates a welcoming space where friendships flourish, wellness is encouraged, and every individual can enhance their quality of life while celebrating the stories and experiences that have shaped our community.
