April 12th Update:
City of Alexandria Provides COVID-19 Updates; COVID-19 Treatment Options; Spring Travel Safety Reminder
For Immediate Release: April 12, 2022
Alexandria is currently at a low COVID-19 community level according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Everyone should stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and get tested if they have symptoms. Individuals may choose to wear a mask at any time. Specific settings, such as health care and congregate facilities, may require masks.
COVID-19 Treatment Options
Various COVID-19 treatment options are available in northern Virginia. If you are at high-risk of severe illness from COVID-19, know your treatment options and talk to your healthcare provider about whether you are a candidate.
The Test to Treat program is a federal initiative that launched in March at pharmacy-based clinics and other locations. The program provides diagnosis and immediate access to two types of lifesaving anti-COVID-19 pills. People with high risk conditions who either test positive for COVID-19 on-site or bring in evidence of a positive COVID-19 test, including a home test, can now receive a prescription and have it filled all in one visit.
Anti-COVID-19 medications, including pills, injections and infusions, are also available by prescription outside of the Test to Treat program. Visit the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) therapeutics website to learn more. VDH also offers a COVID-19 Treatment Locator to search for pharmacies and other facilities with COVID-19 treatment options in Virginia. While the COVID-19 therapeutics are free, some individuals may be charged a copay depending on their insurance and treatment location.
Spring Travel Safety Reminder
The Alexandria Health Department reminds everyone to travel safely this spring. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to stay up-to-date on your vaccinations. If you will be spending time with individuals at higher risk of severe COVID-19, consider getting tested 1-3 days before you travel to see them. Monitor yourself for symptoms after you travel. Masks are currently still required on public transportation such as taxis, planes and trains. Free testing options in Alexandria can be found at alexandriava.gov/COVIDTesting.

The dashboard below includes the percentage of residents ages 5 and older who are fully vaccinated, the number partially and fully vaccinated, and progress toward Alexandria’s and the state’s vaccination goals. At least one dose: Total number of people who received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, including those who received one dose of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine. This metric includes all people who have received only one dose and those who received at least one dose.
Fully Vaccinated: Total number or percent of people who have completed the recommended series of a given vaccine product (i.e., two doses of the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or one dose of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine).

April Emergency Food Distributions
ALIVE! provides bags of food to specific neighborhoods and apartment buildings at pop-up events throughout April, in collaboration with community partners. ALIVE!’s April food distribution will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Drive-through locations include Cora Kelly Elementary School (3600 Commonwealth Ave.) and Northern Virginia Community College Alexandria Campus (lot B-1 via Dawes Ave.). Walk-up locations include Cora Kelly Elementary School (3600 Commonwealth Ave.) and William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Ave.). Distributions take place in the parking lot at each location.

VDH Text to Those with COVID
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) sends a text message to phone numbers associated with a reported positive COVID-19 test to help people act quickly and stay informed. The phone number may show up as either 804-336-3915 or 855-922-2644. The text will read, "The VA Dept of Health received info about your [date] COVID-19 test. Stay home to stop COVID-19 spread. Learn more at: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/isolation-quarantine/. Call your healthcare provider or lab for test result questions. Para español, responda a este texto con el número ‘1’."

Updated CDC Mask Guidance
The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department continue to urge Alexandria residents, businesses and visitors to “Wear It Well” by wearing a mask in public indoor spaces, whether vaccinated or not. This follows guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that everyone should wear masks in indoor public settings in communities of substantial or high transmission. Wearing a mask protects yourself, your family and your community from the current surge of the more contagious COVID-19 omicron variant.
In addition to wearing a mask in indoor public places, “Wear It Well” by following recently updated mask guidance from the CDC:
- Wear a mask with the best fit, protection and comfort for you.
- Choose a mask that has two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric.
- The mask should completely cover your nose, mouth and chin.
- A well-fitting mask fits snugly against the sides of your face and doesn't have gaps.
To help spread the word about wearing masks in public, ‘Masks Recommended’ signs and flyers are available to all organizations, businesses and residences to download and print.

Treatment for COVID-19 Infections
As Alexandria returns to high levels of community spread, more residents are sick with COVID-19 or have a sick loved one. Most mild cases of COVID-19 can be managed at home using over the counter medicines to treat symptoms. Those who are at high risk of severe disease͢—such as older adults, pregnant people and those with underlying medical conditions—should consult their healthcare provider about whether an FDA approved or authorized treatment can reduce their risk of hospitalization or death. The best treatment is prevention. Find a vaccine appointment at alexandriava.gov/Vaccines.
ALIVE! Food Distribution
