Word From The CEO"Occupancy is not an Entitlement"Welcome to the website of the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) which offers housing to all families regardless of race, color, creed, familial status or national origin based on income. The Alexandria Redevelopment & Housing Authority (ARHA) works hard to transform neighborhoods in Alexandria. We provide great new and renovated homes for people who need them as well as bring revitalization to neighborhoods. To accomplish this goal we must have the cooperation of our residents. One major criterion that we must enforce is the "Suitability for Occupancy" our residents must meet the suitability criteria and maintain it. We often have to dispel the myth that eligibility and occupancy is based only on income and the ability to pay. Income and the ability to pay is only one criterion. Suitability, eligibility and continued occupancy are based on current and past behavior for five (5) years.
The above list is not exhaustive, it is meant to highlight some of the major rules and program requirements that we must follow in order to continue providing our residents with quality housing. In these challenging economic times for housing and jobs, we strengthen our commitment to our residents to provide safe and affordable housing. In closing, suitability refers to identifiable character traits and conduct sufficient to decide whether an individual or family is likely or unlikely to fulfill and maintain the rules and requirements of ARHA and HUD. All ARHA residents must remember "Occupancy is not an Entitlement" |
